CNC Router Rotary Axis Finder
A rotary attachment becomes a usable fourth axis only when the exact CNC, controller, motor/driver, physical clearance and CAM workflow all line up. This finder returns current manufacturer-backed rotary paths for supported machines and deliberately avoids third-party compatibility guesses.
A chuck that fits on the spoilboard is not enough. A useful fourth-axis path also needs a compatible motor/driver or controller configuration, enough physical clearance, an appropriate post processor/toolpath strategy and workholding sized for the stock.

Genmitsu: current SainSmart listings separate small 3018/3020 rotary hardware, a 4040-PRO/3030 family, a PROVerXL 4030 V2/4×4 family, and a different PROVerXL 4030 V1/6050 Plus family. FoxAlien: the current Masuter Pro rotary is a NEMA17/30:1 harmonic-reducer system, while the 2026 closed-loop NEMA23 rotary is a separate family for newer closed-loop machines. Rotary project-fit checklist
- Stock diameter: confirm the chuck's forward/reverse clamping range and whether jaws can hold the actual part shape.
- Stock length: compare the usable chuck-to-tailstock length, not just the overall rotary frame length.
- Center height and Z clearance: make sure the tool can reach the top and sides of the stock with the intended cutter without hitting clamps, chuck or tailstock.
- Controller path: verify the exact machine's driver/cable/configuration instructions.
- CAM strategy: decide whether the job uses wrapped 2D/2.5D toolpaths, indexed positioning or simultaneous rotary machining and confirm the CAM/post supports it.
- Dust/chip control: rotary work changes where chips travel and may not work with the same dust shoe used for flat work.
Include rotary in the full setup budget
A fourth axis can add the rotary hardware, controller/driver requirements, CAM capability and new workholding. Add those items in the CNC setup-cost calculator rather than comparing only the machine purchase price.
Frequently asked questions
Is a rotary axis the same as a laser rotary roller?
No. A CNC fourth-axis module is driven as a machining axis and is used with cutting toolpaths. A laser rotary roller is an accessory for rotating work during laser engraving. Some manufacturers sell both, and they should not be treated as interchangeable.
Can I add a fourth axis to any CNC router?
No. The machine needs a compatible motor/driver or controller path, physical mounting and clearance, and CAM/control support. Use a rotary module explicitly published for the exact machine or controller family.
Does a fourth axis replace one of the X, Y or Z axes?
It depends on the machine/controller. Some desktop systems repurpose an existing axis driver/cable while higher-end controllers provide a dedicated rotary/A-axis path. Follow the exact manufacturer configuration rather than assuming a universal wiring model.
What can a CNC rotary axis make?
Typical use cases include cylindrical engraving, round signs, decorative columns, table legs, chess pieces and indexed or wrapped machining where the workpiece rotates under the cutting tool.
Do I need special CAM software for rotary work?

Why does the finder omit machines that might accept a third-party rotary?
